Over 7,600 company start-ups have been formed so far this year.
7,665 new companies have been formed between the 1st January and 12th May 2016 - an average of almost 60 per day. Just over a fifth of these new companies (1,593) operate in the professional services sector (accountants, consultants, legal practices etc).
The finance and wholesale & retail sectors were the second and third most popular industries for start-ups and accounted for just over 1,700 new companies between them.
There was good news for the construction sector which has seen a 29% increase in numbers this year (694 v 538).
During the same period we have seen 9,864 businesses registered. 65% (6,377) were set-up by sole-traders, 26% (2,517) by companies and the remainder by partnerships (two or more individuals).
