Company start-ups for the first 9 months of 2014 up over 12% on the same period last year.

13,085 company start-ups have been formed during the first 9 months of this year - an average of 1,453 per month - the highest figure we've seen since 2007 (14,505).

During 2008 to 2013 company start-ups in the first nine months of the year did not reach the 11,700 mark.

Each month this year has seen more new companies formed than the corresponding month in 2013 with professional services being the most popular industry as it accounts for a quarter of start-ups.

3,223 start-ups this year operate in that sector - up 11% on the same time last year. Wholesale and retail and social & personal services account for a further 10.5% and 9% of start-ups respectively this year.

One industry that has received a significant boost is the construction sector where 1,000 new companies have been formed. That represents a 35% increase on 2013's figure of 739 start-ups.
